Solid fuels and firelighting products

Nordic Swan ecolabelled solid fuels and firelighting products have a reduced environmental and climate impact throughout their lifecycle.

The requirements include:

  • Use of renewable and responsibly sourced materials.
  • Limits on energy consumption in production, including strict requirements for the use of fossil energy.
  • Compliance with relevant quality tests, eg. combustion properties.

The product group covers a wide range of product types such as barbeque charcoal, briquettes, firelighters, firewood, pellets and wood briquettes. Disposable barbecues cannot be certified.

  3. Start your application.

If this is the first time you are applying, the authorized signatory must fill in your company information and approve the application conditions. In this way, you get login to the portal and the right to assign access to other colleagues.

Ecolabelling Sweden AB has no financial profit purpose and is financed through the fees above along with an annual government grant. The company is however liable for VAT according to article 56 of the European Council Directive 2006/112/EC.

Invoicing is made in SEK with the exchange rate from the first banking day of the year.

When both the applicant and the manufacturer are micro-enterprises, the application fee is reduced by 50%. A micro-enterprise is in this context defined as an enterprise with less than 10 employees and an annual turnover (of both ecolabelled and not ecolabelled products) below 2 million EUR.

Information on the latest version of the criteria for solid fuels and firelightning products

The new generation criteria was adopted 13 October 2025 and are valid from 31 October 2030. The new version is called 4.0.

3.4 ⇛ 3.5: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

The validity of the criteria has been prolonged. The new version, 3.5, is valid until 30 September 2026.

3.3 ⇛ 3.4: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

The validity of the criteria has been prolonged with 15 months. The new version, 3.4, is valid until 30 June 2025.

3.2 ⇛ 3.3: Alteration of the criteria

Requirement O27 Take-back system has been removed. The new version is called 3.3 and is valid until March 31, 2024.

3.1 ⇛ 3.2: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

The validity of the criteria has been prolonged with 24 monthsr. The new version, 3.2, is valid until 31 Mars 2024.

3.0 ⇛ 3.1: Alteration of the criteria

On 18 October 2017, the adjusted requirement to radiation intensity in requirement 017 was remowed from the criteria. Furthermore, the document was updated with a number of former interpretation requirements. The new version is called 3.1 and is valid until March 31st 2022.

The new generation criteria was published on March 6th 2017 and is valid until March 31st 2022.
