Window replacement

A Nordic Swan Ecolabel window replacement contributes to a circular economy and reduced climate impact. It meets strict requirements for the whole life cycle of the service, including recycling of the glass in existing windows and doors, mapping of hazardous materials, handling of construction waste and the quality of the window installation.

The requirements include:

  • Recycling of the float glass in existing windows and doors into new window glass. This contributes to circularity, reduced depletion of virgin resources and significantly reduced climate impact.
  • Identification and correct handling of harmful substances in the existing windows/doors and installation materials.
  • Replacement of the existing windows with at least 80% Nordic Swan Ecolabel windows to ensure high energy performance and low environmental impact*.
  • Sorting of the main fractions of waste generated during dismantling and installation.
  • Quality control of the installation of the new windows.
  • Environmental properties and health properties of chemicals in new installation materials. This applies to construction materials (e.g. insulation, tapes and sealing strips) and chemical building products such as sealants.

* Excluding windows with the following special requirements: Fire-safety, noise reduction, double-glazed windows for holiday homes, laminated glass and hardened glass. Window replacement on the Nordic market can be certified with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.

The service must include the entire process from initial inspection of the existing windows to the final approval of the installation of the new windows. In addition, the service must include all window replacements conducted by the company.

Version 1.1 of the criteria for Nordic Swan Ecolabel window replacement was released in September 2025. O4 Identification and marking of window glass was updated to clarify how documentation can be handled in a complex organization with several employees and subcontractors. Furthermore, an exemption was introduced for IPBC in appendix 1, which is exactly the same as is introduced in the criteria for New Buildings generation 4.

1.0: New criteria generation

Nordic Ecolabelling adopted version 1.0 of the criteria for window replacement on 29 November 2024. The criteria are valid until 31 December 2029.
