Liquid and gaseous fuels

The product group includes liquid and gaseous fuels for transport (road, sea and air), heating and industrial purposes. Gaseous fuels also include liquefied biogas (LBG) and bio-LPG (also called renewable propane or biopropane).

The requirements include:

  • Use of 100% renewable raw materials.
  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 75-90% compared to fossil-based alternatives.
  • Use of biogenic residue and waste in gaseous fuels.
  • Renewable material from responsible produced, traceable and controlled sources.
  • Prohibition against use of primary food and feed crops as well as genetically modified plants.
  • Prohibition against problematic feedstocks, such as palm oil and soy oil.
  • Code of Conduct for working conditions in the production of raw materials, liquid and gaseous fuels to ensure compliance with relevant UN conventions.
  • Fulfilment of recognized fuel standards to ensure good combustion characteristics.

Annual licence fee

The licence fee for the Nordic Swan Ecolabelled products is based on their turnover in the Nordic region.

Ecolabelling Sweden AB has no financial profit purpose and is financed through the fees above along with an annual government grant. The company is however liable for VAT according to article 56 of the European Council Directive 2006/112/EC.

Invoicing is made in SEK with the exchange rate from the first banking day of the year.

When both the applicant and the manufacturer are micro-enterprises, the application fee is reduced by 50%. A micro-enterprise is in this context defined as an enterprise with less than 10 employees and an annual turnover (of both ecolabelled and not ecolabelled products) below 2 million EUR.

Information on the latest version of the criteria for liquid and gaseous fuels

On 4 February 2025 Nordic Ecolabelling adopted an adjustment in the requirement for quality standards (O11) referring to updated standards. The new version is 4.1.

4.0 New generation of criteria

The Nordic Ecolabelling Board decided on 7 December, 2022 to adopt a new generaton of criteria for Nordic Ecolabelled liquid and gaseous fuels. Criteria generation 4.0. is valid until December 31, 2027.

3.2 ⇛ 3.3 Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

The criteria has been prolonged with 4 months. The new version is called 3.3 and is valid until 31 December 2023.

3.1 ⇛ 3.2: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

The criteria has been prolonged with 17 months. The new version, 3.2, is valid until 31 August 2023.

3.0 ⇛ 3.1: Prolongation of the validity of the criteria

The criteria has been prolonged with 9 months. The new version, 3.1, is valid until 31 March 2022.

3.0: New generation of criteria

The criteria for liquid and gaseous fuels were decided on by Nordic Ecolabelling on the 14 June 2017. Version, 3.0, is valid until 30 June 2021.
